It’s not over. Yes, it’s been three months since the 7.0 earthquake hit Haiti. Yes, the media has burned itself out bombarding us with coverage of the "story," but it’s still not over. The death toll is unknown but tens of thousands of people were taken to mass graves literally by the truckloads. Many families were wiped out and even more where left with a gaping hole that loved ones once fill. Almost two million people, two thirds the population of Orange County, CA are now homeless and living in tents. But, there is still the worse to come.
The Monsoon season, which is deadly in Haiti during the best of times, has already begun to tease Haiti with rain. With the rain, a whole new group of problems will fall upon Haiti. Many are living in inadequate structures that are exposed to the elements and the ruble of the ruined city will only intensify the flooding. With the flooding, will come issues of sanitation, disease and the death toll will rise once again. Yet, these are still just the problems of the present.
Not only lives were lost in the quake but livelihoods. Before the earthquake struck, Haiti was already one of the poorest countries in the western hemispheric. Now business owners are left with nothing but ruble and trash, people no longer have jobs to go to, there is no power or running water, this isn't just a natural disaster this is an entire country devastated. This is a county that needs our help.
